TODAY IN BASEBALL- SEPTEMBER

September 9, 1971

 

John Young makes Major League debut grounding out against former American League Cy Young Award Winner, Jim Lonberg as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Boston Red Sox 12-6.  Young entered the game as a pinch hitter for Tigers shortstop Ed Brinkman and grounded to Red Sox third baseman Rico Petrocelli who fielded the ball and threw to first baseman George Scoot to record he out. 

 

It was a tough night for Tigers rookies.  Starting pitcher Bill Gilbreath pitched 1.2 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, and 1 walk.  Tigers reliever Jack Whillock was the Losing pitcher, allowing 3 hits, 4 earned runs, a walk, in a third of an inning.

 

 

September 25, 1971

 

John Young records his first Major League hit, a double off RHP Roger Hambright as the Detroit Tigers defeat the New York Yankees 10-7 in an afternoon game played at Tigers Stadium.  Young’s two hit performance was overshadowed by Detroit’s rookie catcher, Tim Hosley’s two home runs and five RBI.  Lefty Les “Sugar” Cain was the winning pitcher and reliever Tom “Rooster” Timmerman.  Young was not in the starting lineup but entered the game as a pinch hitter for Hall of Famer Al Kaline
